Visiting BuzzWorks to celebrate community beekeeping and call for more volunteers

Alistair Strathern, MP for the Hitchin constituency, visited BuzzWorks in Hitchin this week to meet their hardworking volunteers, learn more about their educational work, and highlight the role the charity plays in helping local communities discover the vital world of bees.

BuzzWorks is a volunteer-run association offering hands-on learning at its Bee Discovery Centre on Old Hale Way, where families, schools, and community groups can explore their bee friendly garden, and take part in activities that teach the importance of pollinators. The charity also produces local honey and can provide training for buzzing young beekeepers!

During the visit, Alistair met with volunteers who explained that Buzzworks’ incredible Open Days rely heavily on local people giving their time to support with the educational sessions and beekeeping activities. With demand for their events growing, the charity is keen to welcome more volunteers to help sustain and expand their work.

Buzzworks also runs a popular stall at the Hitchin Farmers Market on the last Saturday of every month, where residents can buy pure Hitchin honey, learn about beekeeping opportunities, and speak with volunteers about the charity’s education programmes.

While their BuzzWorks Open Days at the Discovery Centre are fully booked this year, they are still offering educational visits for local schools.
