Addressing a London rally calling for better paternity leave

Alistair Strathern, Member of Parliament for Hitchin, joined parents, and campaigners in central London to call for urgent improvements to paternity leave.

The rally, organised by The Dad Shift as part of its #ParentStrike campaign, brought together parents from across the country to highlight the challenges facing families and to push for reforms including better paid paternity leave and more flexible working arrangements.

Alistair Strathern addressed those gathered alongside campaigners who also spoke in support of strengthening paternity leave rights for fathers.

Speaking at the event, Alistair Strathern emphasised the importance of ensuring parents have the support they need during the crucial early weeks of a child's life.

The UK's current statutory paternity leave entitlement of two weeks falls far behind that offered in many comparable countries, leaving many fathers unable to be present during the earliest stages of their child's life. It creates a wealth divide where only wealthier dads can afford to take extended time off work.

The demonstration formed part of a wider national campaign calling for at least six weeks of paternity leave paid at a significantly higher rate, alongside greater access to flexible working for parents.

Alistair Strathern MP said:

"The arrival of a new child should be a time when parents can focus on their family, not worry about whether they can afford to take time off work.

"Our current paternity leave system simply does not reflect the realities of modern family life. Giving dads and partners the opportunity to spend meaningful time with their new children is good for dads and mums, good for children's development and good for society as a whole."

"Parents should not have to choose between being there for their family and paying the bills. We need a system that recognises the value of parenting and gives families the support they deserve. I'm proud to stand with campaigners, dads and families calling for change."
